Library signage

Signs – so many of them, in so many places – how well do they get their message across?

Libraries are fond of signs, and rules, so it’s dangerously easy to end up plastering the walls with notices about what you can’t do.  Take a look at the Flickr Library Signage pool for many examples!

Today I read Stephen Abram’s post about encouraging postive behavio(u)rs. One of my tasks this week is to consider signage in the OULS Staff Library.

These are the points I’m going to bear in mind:

  • Concise
  • Clear
  • Positive encouragement not negative prohibition e.g. “Please use your mobile phone in this area” vs “No mobile phones in this library”
  • Graphical – using maps and pictures where possible
